Meiotic drivers bias their transmission, often threatening population balance. A new paper from the lab shows that in Drosophila, the X-linked Stellate (Ste) gene represents a novel driver that targets Y-bearing sperm. However, Ste’s own mechanism limits its impact: it segregates asymmetrically in both meiosis I and II, sparing half of the Y-bearing spermatids. This self-limiting behavior reveals how sex chromosome drivers can persist without driving populations to collapse.
