Meiotic drivers skew inheritance by sabotaging competing gametes, but how they do so at the cellular level is often unclear. A new study from the lab reveals how the Drosophila X-linked driver Stellate (Ste) disrupts sperm development by interfering with nuclear remodeling. The work shows that Ste-containing spermatids fail to properly remove nuclear envelope components, delaying an essential step required for sperm DNA compaction. This defect is accompanied by impaired formation of the dense complex, a microtubule-based structure that supports sperm nuclear shaping. Together, these findings uncover an unexpected mechanism by which a meiotic driver undermines Y-bearing sperm and biases its own transmission.
