Drosophila Y-linked genes with megabase-sized introns rely on co-transcriptional splicing to remain functional. Disrupting splicing impairs transcription and causes transcript entanglement in the nucleus. A new paper from the lab reveals that splicing keeps nascent RNAs below a critical length, enabling proper expression of these exceptionally large genes.
